Accurate colour scales for data visualisation have a constant local colour contrast between neighbouring colour values along the individual gradients. The open-access Scientific colour maps (Crameri, 2018) are perceptually-uniform and also colour-blind friendly colour gradients that are suitable for mapping data with colour in any type of science graph.

Theoretical terraforming Mars using the Scientific colormap ‘oleron‘ of Crameri (2018) highlighting the planet’s surface dichotomy. The animation shows the digital elevation model (available from https://astrogeology.usgs.gov) based on Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter data (MOLA; Smith et al. 1999) obtained on NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft (Albee et al. 2001).

Effective visualisation through a scientific use of colours. Non-scientific colour maps (a,b) like rainbow always misrepresent data, are often not intuitive, and are inaccessible to a large portion of the readers, while scientific colour maps (c,d) like lajolla or vik (Crameri et al., 2020) ensure unbiased and intuitive data representation and are inclusive to readers with colour-vision deficiencies and even colour blindness.
